Angela Thirkell Publishers    ANGELA THIRKELL PUBLISHERS

Angela Thirkell worked with a variety of publishers, but Hamish Hamilton is the original publisher in England of the Barsetshire novels. One U.S. publisher currently publishes Angela Thirkell -- Moyer Bell. Moyer Bell (Asphodel Press) keeps most of the Angela Thirkell novels in trade-paperback form in current stock and these versions are widely available.

Original American hardcover editions were published by Alfred A. Knopf, now a part of Random House. Read about Knopf himself in Alfred A. Knopf. The University of Texas at Austin has the Records for Angela Thirkell at Random House, roughly corresponding to the years of publication in the U. S.

The Common Reader, no longer in business, published two of Angela Thirkell's works with their Commen Reader Editions (CRE) of "Trooper to the Southern Cross" and "Tribute for Harriette"(previously published as "The Fortunes of Harriette").

Of course, Hamish Hamilton was her long-time UK publisher; these first editions are very difficult to find in second-hand bookstores, as they have been picked up quickly by collectors. Penguin Publishers succeeded Hamish Hamilton as holders of the Barsetshire novels copyrights. In 1998, Penguin in the U.K. issued "The Brandons", "Before Lunch", and "Cheerfulness Breaks In".

Popular today are the small-format paperback books published by Pyramid, with their advertisements of lurid romantic adventures (now humorous) on the back covers. Increasingly rare, their paperback format makes them fragile and hard-to-find.

It should be noted that many books are available recorded and in braille from NLS, a service of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS). These include recordings of Before Lunch, The Brandons, Cheerfulness Breaks In, Coronation Summer, County Chronicle, The Duke's Daughter, Enter Sir Robert, Growing Up, Happy Returns, and The Headmistress. Braille versions are available for: The Brandons, Cheerfulness Breaks In, County Chronicle, A Double Affair, The Duke's Daughter, and The Headmistress.
